At the end of the video you mentioned that you are running out of room to plant? more in your garden. I couldn’t tell for sure but it appears that you are still thinking in terms of row gardening. Unless you are using a tractor you should forget about rows. If you use the techniques of Square Foot Gardening you can grow more crops in the same space. There is a Square Foot Gardening book as well as a website. (The website name is obvious.)

I think she said in the video that the wood is 3 years old so I imagine all the chemicals have leached out? and are gone by now. It might be a good idea in the future not to use the treated wood though. For natural alternatives something like Cypress, Cedar or Redwood could be? used.

Regarding the beds being pressure treated lumber. It used to be treated with a product that contained traces of arsenic. The code was CCA.

New products no longer contain that. They use Alkaline cooper quaternary (ACQ). After research including speaking with colleagues at Texas A&M this is what we used.

They found it to be safe? and other studies I researched found the same. Not all pressure treated lumber is the same. Look for lumber treated with ACQ and avoid those treated with CCA.

@AshdownRoses Thank you so much? for posting this information about CURRENT pressure treated wood. I suppose people get excited when you say “pressure treated” because they grew up with the Arsenic type treatment. Kind of like the old wives tales: If you shave your legs more hair will grow back. Erm, not really a great metaphor is it.

  6. HackerGuitarist says:

@AshdownRoses receint studies have shown that ACQ, while not as harmfull does give off? bad things.it’s not perfect either.what I do is use natural wood and treat it with 2 applications of linseed oil..my beds show no signs of decay after 5 years.

You can “chop and drop” to create valuable mulch!. You should not chop and drop dead tomato vines because they have a chemical in them that suppresses other plant’s growth. So take them out and compost them separately to be used only in “tomato only” containers. If you keep dropping the vegetable cuttings back into the raised beds (and NEVER allow your soil to be uncovered) you can boost production greatly without ANY fertilizer. Add red earth worms! And use the suggested? compost tea.

does pressure treated lumber not bleed cancer causing chemicals in the food we consume? i only use cedar and untreated spruce/ pine, i dont believe studies? are 100% correct takes to long to prove, better safe than sorry i guess
